Dear SOMP Members,

It is our great pleasure to invite you to the 16th Regional Meeting of the Society of Mining Professors (SOMP), to be held in İzmir, Türkiye, from May 29 to June 3, 2027.

This gathering will bring together mining academics, researchers, and industry professionals to exchange ideas, strengthen international partnerships, and explore the future of mining education and research. At a time of growing demand for minerals and rapid technological change, our meeting will provide a timely opportunity to discuss how universities can advance responsible resource development and prepare the next generation of mining engineers.

The programme will address mining education and workforce development, international research collaboration, digital transformation and artificial intelligence, sustainable mining, critical minerals, and occupational health and safety. Scientific sessions, industry–academia discussions, and technical visits will offer opportunities to share experience and turn common interests into lasting collaborations.

Beyond the scientific programme, we invite you to experience İzmir’s rich cultural heritage, welcoming atmosphere, and beautiful Aegean surroundings. We hope that the connections made here will extend well beyond the meeting, inspiring new research, educational initiatives, and friendships.
